Insights Ahead of the Summit with DSTGAMING
Ahead of the SBEA+ Summit, we spoke with John Tan, a representative from DSTGAMING, to gain insights into the current industry landscape and the opportunities emerging across African gaming markets.
Discussing the trends influencing the future of sports betting in East Africa, John shared:
“East Africa’s sports betting sector is being shaped by several converging trends, with mobile-first consumption leading the transformation. The widespread adoption of smartphones has shifted betting behaviour toward on-the-go wagering, driving demand for lightweight platforms, real-time odds delivery, and seamless user experiences optimised for varying network conditions.
Equally significant is the continued growth of digital payment ecosystems, particularly mobile money services, which enable financial inclusion for large segments of the population previously underserved by traditional banking. This expands the addressable market for operators while also raising expectations for instant deposits and withdrawals.
Another key factor is the gradual formalisation of regulatory frameworks across the region. Governments are increasingly seeking to balance revenue generation with consumer protection, favouring operators capable of maintaining compliance across multiple jurisdictions. Finally, localised content – including regional leagues, culturally relevant promotions, and language adaptation – will play a crucial role in long-term engagement.
Together, these trends point toward a market that rewards technologically agile, compliant, and locally aware platform providers.”
Reflecting on what makes the East African betting market unique compared to more mature regions, he explained:
“East Africa stands out due to its combination of rapid digital adoption and relatively low legacy infrastructure constraints. Unlike mature markets, where operators often must integrate with older systems and established betting habits, East Africa presents a mobile-native environment where consumers are accustomed to digital services as their primary access point.
Another distinguishing factor is the central role of community and sport culture, particularly football, which drives extremely high engagement levels even outside major international tournaments. Betting activity is closely tied to daily sporting conversations, local leagues, and regional rivalries.
The payment ecosystem also differs markedly. Mobile money platforms function not merely as alternatives to banking but as the dominant financial channel for many users. This creates a transactional environment that is fast, accessible, and deeply embedded in everyday life. From an operator perspective, the market offers strong growth potential but requires localisation at every level – from payment methods and language to risk management and customer support – rather than a simple replication of strategies used in Europe or Asia.”
On the role of mobile money in supporting betting platforms across the region, John noted:
“Mobile money integration is not just important in East Africa – it is foundational. For many users, mobile wallets serve as their primary financial tool, meaning that a platform without reliable mobile money support would struggle to achieve meaningful adoption.
Seamless integration enables instant deposits and withdrawals, reduces friction during onboarding, and enhances trust by using familiar payment channels. It also supports micro-transaction behaviour, which is common in mobile-driven economies where users prefer smaller, more frequent wagers.
From an operational standpoint, integrating with multiple mobile money providers can improve coverage across different countries and telecom networks, ensuring accessibility for a broader user base. However, it also requires robust reconciliation systems, fraud prevention measures, and compliance procedures to handle high transaction volumes efficiently.
For platform providers like DSTGAMING, delivering secure, scalable, and localised payment integrations is a critical component of enabling operators to succeed in the region.”
Addressing the challenges companies may face when entering East African markets, he shared:
“Companies entering East Africa should anticipate a highly fragmented regulatory landscape, where licensing requirements, taxation structures, and compliance obligations vary significantly from one jurisdiction to another. Staying aligned with evolving regulations requires continuous monitoring and the ability to adapt platform features accordingly.
Operationally, infrastructure variability can present challenges. Network reliability, device diversity, and differences in data costs mean platforms must be optimised for performance under less predictable conditions than in mature markets. Customer verification processes may also require flexible approaches due to varying levels of formal identification systems.
Another consideration is the need for strong local partnerships – including payment providers, marketing affiliates, and compliance advisors – to navigate market nuances effectively. Cultural understanding is equally important, as messaging and product positioning must resonate with local audiences while remaining responsible and compliant.
Success in the region ultimately depends on balancing global technological standards with deep local adaptation.”
Looking ahead to the SBEA+ Summit 2026, John expressed enthusiasm about DSTGAMING participating in the upcoming event:
“Events such as the SBEA+ Summit provide a vital platform for dialogue among regulators, operators, technology providers, and investors at a time when the regional market is entering a new phase of maturity. Face-to-face discussions help clarify regulatory expectations, identify emerging opportunities, and address shared challenges in a collaborative setting.
DSTGAMING is particularly interested in exchanging insights on localisation strategies, payment innovation, and compliance best practices, as well as understanding the evolving needs of operators across different East African jurisdictions. These conversations often lead to strategic partnerships that drive sustainable growth beyond individual markets.
Industry gatherings also play an important role in promoting responsible development by encouraging knowledge-sharing and alignment on standards. As global attention increasingly turns toward Africa, forums like this help ensure that expansion occurs in a structured, compliant, and mutually beneficial manner for all stakeholders.”
DSTGAMING’s perspective highlights the importance of continued collaboration between operators, technology providers and regulators as the African gaming market continues to evolve.
